1. You are able to search by file type- If you need to find a particular file type you can search Google for PDFs or DOCs that contain the keywords you are looking for. Just type “filetype:pdf” into Google (without the quotations) after your keywords and the file type you entered will show up in the search results.
2. Search for Scholarly Articles- This can tie into the first trick. Say you are seeking a PDF but you want it to be a credible source and a scholarly article. Simply type “site:edu” at the end of your search string and Google will only search for websites that end in “.edu”.
3. Quick Definitions- Want the definition of a word in an instant? Type “define:” into Google followed by the word you need the definition of and the search engine will show you the definition very quickly. Very useful if you have a Google search bar in the corner of your browser and do not want to open up dictionary.com in a separate tab.
4. What Time is it there?- Working with clients in a different time zone? Friend overseas and you’re not sure when to call them? Typing “time” followed by the location you want to know the time of will bring you the exact time on Google. Now you’ll know exactly when you can do business or when is a good time to call your friend.
5. Mathematician- Want to impress your friends with your math skills? Type any math expression into Google and the search engine will do the rest. Google can even figure out trigonometry expressions. For example, the search engine can tell you that sin(85)/cos(75) equals .278. No hard thinking needed.
There are many more tricks up the popular search engine’s sleeves. Experiment and see what you are able to come up with. I will give you a hint about one, Google knows a lot about many different types of currency.
